March 27, 2025: A devastating wave of wildfires has swept across South Korea, claiming 27 lives and burning more than 35,000 hectares of forest. This disaster has surpassed all previous records, with the Korea Forest Service confirming it as the deadliest and largest wildfire in the country’s history since 1987.

The wildfires, which started over the weekend, have ravaged the south eastern region, forcing around 37,000 people to flee their homes.

While last year was South Korea’s hottest year on record, the temperature leading up to the blaze were actually colder than usual.

The wildfires have destroyed over 325 buildings and structures, injured 30 people, and forced more than 37,000 to evacuate. The govt has mobilized thousands of people, dozens of helicopters and other equipment to combat the blaze.
