March 30, 2025: On April 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s first vertical lift bridge, the new Pamban Bridge, connecting mainland India to Rameshwaram Island in Tamil Nadu. This feat of modern engineering will revolutionize travel, reducing cross time from 25-30 minutes to under 5 minutes.
A game- changer in connectivity:
The 2.5 km long bridge boasts a maximum speed limit of 75 kmph, making it an attractive route for trains. Its vertical lift feature allows ships to pass through, ensuring uninterrupted maritime movement.
Key features:
Speed: designed for 80 kmph, with approved speed limits of 75 kmph and 50 kmph for the vertical lift portion.
Vertical lift: Enables ships to pass through, facilitating maritime trade.
The new Pamban bridge replaces the century old colonial era bridge, which was closed due to corrosion. Constructed at a cost of Rs 535 crore by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), this marvel is a testament to India’s growing infrastructure prowess.
