March 27, 2025: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced a game-changing initiative for India’s ride-hailing industry. Introducing “Sahkar Taxi”, a co-operative based service designed to benefit drivers directly. Modelled after popular platforms like Ola and Uber, Sahkar Taxi will allow co-operative societies to register various vehicles without intermediaries taking a cut from driver’s earnings.
This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through co-operation). Shah emphasized that this is not just a slogan, but a tangible effort to empower drivers.
This announcement comes at a time when major ride-hailing platforms, Ola and Uber, are facing scrutiny over allegations of discriminatory pricing. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to both companies after reports suggested that ride fares varied based on the user’s phone operating system.
Key features of Sahkar taxi includes:
: Co operative based model
: No intermediaries
: Multi- vehicle support
