March 23, 2025: Bangladesh is witnessing increasing tensions between the military and newly formed student-led national citizen party (NCP). The NCP has accused the military of interfering in politics, which has led to intensified army patrols on the streets of Dhaka.

At the heart of the issue is the NCP’s opposition to the military’s alleged plan to rehabilitate the Awami League, led by deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Awami League was ousted seven months ago following a violent student-led protest in July-August last year.

The NCP which was established last month with the backing of Professor Muhammad Yunus, staged protest rallies at Dhaka University. The party has vowed to thwart any attempt to revive the Awami League, which they believe is a “military-backed plot.”

A key leader of the military has accused the military of “political interference” over a proposal that would allow the Awami League to participate in the next elections. This has sparked concerns about the military’s role in politics and the future of democracy in Bangladesh.
