France urges citizens to leave Iran immediately

March 21, 2025: The French Govt has issued a warning to its citizens, advising them to leave Iran immediately. This warning comes after the release of a French national who had been imprisoned in Iran for over 880 days.

According to Christophe Lemoine, spokesperson for the foreign ministry, French Citizens are at risk of being detained without reasons. “They are in immediate danger of being arrested and detained without motive, simply because they’re French or European citizens,” he said.

The released French citizen, Olivier Grondeau, was freed after successful diplomatic efforts by French Authorities. French President Emmanuel Macron didn’t provide details on the reasons behind Grondeau’s release.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot praised the efforts of French diplomats and authorities, saying, “This release is a credit to French diplomacy and the hard work of our embassy in Tehran.”

Barrot also mentioned that France is working to secure the release of other hostages held in Iran.

In a related development, another French citizen, who had been under house arrest in Tehran for over four months was also released.
