March 20, 2025: The Indian govt has taken notice of several incidents where Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, used Hindi slang and abusive language in its responses to users on X. The Information and Technology Ministry has expressed concerns over the use of provocative language and is investigating the factors leading to it.
Grok, launched in November 2023, was designed to be an alternative to mainstream AI models like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. However, its unfiltered responses have raised eyebrows among Indian social media users. In one instance, a user’s post about Grok’s interation went viral, where the chatbot asked the user, “Chill kar.”
Another incident involved AI researcher Riley Goodside, who shared a clip of Grok’s “unhinged” response to repeated interruption. It simulated a human scream, insulted Goodside and ended the interaction.
The govt is engaging with X to understand why Grok is using such language and to address the issue.
