November 1, 2024: The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) reported over 300 fire-related incidents during the Diwali festivities, although there were no life-threatening cases. This year's celebrations saw an influx of calls to emergency services, prompting officials to highlight their preparedness.
According to DFS Director Atul Garg, the majority of incidents occurred between 5 PM on Diwali and 6 AM the following morning, with 192 calls logged from 5 PM to midnight and an additional 158 between midnight and 6 AM. "In just 12 hours, the number of incidents exceeded 300," Garg stated.
Despite the high volume of calls, Garg reassured the public that no major fires were reported. The DFS had bolstered its fire response team for the occasion, which contributed to the lack of serious incidents. However, there were minor fires, including one in Vikaspuri that left two individuals unconscious and another in Mangolpuri that injured a woman and two children.
A notable incident involved a fire on a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus, where a blast occurred after a passenger reportedly carried potash—a highly flammable substance used in firecracker manufacturing. "Two people were injured, and we dispatched two fire tenders to address the situation," Garg explained.
Earlier, on the eve of Diwali, another incident was reported when crackers ignited inside a DTC bus, resulting in burn injuries to a passenger and a co-passenger.
