October 31, 2024: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced significant progress in India-China relations, confirming that both nations have achieved a consensus aimed at restoring the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to what it was prior to the border skirmishes of 2020. Speaking at an event in Tezpur, Singh highlighted ongoing dialogues focused on resolving conflicts in eastern Ladakh, particularly in the Depsang and Demchok plains.
The Minister's comments follow confirmation from Army sources that disengagement between Indian and Chinese forces in these tense regions has been successfully completed. This development opens the door for the resumption of routine patrolling, marking a crucial step towards stabilizing the border situation.
In a symbolic gesture of goodwill, troops from both sides are set to exchange sweets today in celebration of Diwali, a move indicative of easing tensions after years of military standoff that began with the deadly clashes in Galwan Valley in June 2020.
Singh emphasized that the consensus achieved is rooted in "equal and mutual security," and includes agreements on the rights of patrolling and grazing in traditional areas. "Our efforts will be to move the matter beyond disengagement," he stated, urging patience as both countries work towards a more comprehensive resolution.
Earlier this month, India and China announced an agreement on patrolling along the LAC, signaling a breakthrough after more than four years of heightened military presence and conflict.
