February 26, 2025: In a major disciplinary action, over 100 policemen from Pakistan's Punjab Police have been dismissed for refusing to perform security duties during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The dismissed personnel, belonging to various wings of the police force, were assigned to provide security for teams traveling between Lahore’s Qaddafi Stadium and designated hotels. However, according to a Punjab Police spokesperson, they either failed to report for duty or outright refused their assignments.
Inspector General of Punjab Police (IGP) Usman Anwar took strict notice of the issue, emphasizing that negligence in securing international events is unacceptable. “There is no room for complacency when it comes to ensuring safety at such high-profile events,” he stated.
While no official reason has been provided for the refusals, local media reports suggest that the officers felt overburdened due to extended duty hours.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has denied reports of any security threats to the tournament. Speaking to Geo News, he reassured that Pakistan is successfully hosting the ICC Champions Trophy, with packed stadiums and jubilant fans celebrating the sport.
The development comes amid Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament, following crushing defeats to New Zealand and India.
