February 24, 2025: The first session of the newly elected Delhi Assembly commenced on Monday with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her six cabinet ministers taking oath as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
The session began with BJP MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely being sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker. He was administered the oath by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena at the Raj Niwas before the proceedings started.
Gupta was the first to take the oath, followed by her Cabinet ministers and other MLAs. Notably, BJP MLA Kapil Mishra took his oath in Sanskrit, AAP’s Sanjeev Jha in Maithili, and BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa in Punjabi, showcasing linguistic diversity in the House.
The proceedings officially began with legislators singing Vande Mataram, setting a patriotic tone for the new Assembly. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva was present in the Speaker’s gallery to witness the historic session.
Later in the day, the election for the new Speaker is scheduled to take place, with BJP MLA Vijender Gupta being the frontrunner for the position.
This marks the beginning of a new legislative term in Delhi, with the BJP-led government set to outline its agenda for governance in the coming days.
