Atishi Appointed as Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Making History

February 23, 2025: Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. This marks a historic moment as she becomes the first woman to hold this position. The upcoming assembly session will also witness a unique political landscape, with both the Chief Minister and the Leader of Opposition being women for the first time in Delhi’s history.

Atishi was chosen for the role during AAP’s legislative meeting earlier today. Expressing gratitude for the appointment, she stated, "Thanks to Aam Aadmi Party's national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the Legislative Party for trusting me. A strong Opposition raises the voice of the people. The Aam Aadmi Party will fulfill all the promises made by BJP."

The appointment comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the February 5 elections, winning 48 out of 70 assembly seats. AAP, which previously held power in the capital, managed to win 22 seats, while the Congress failed to secure any.

Atishi’s new role as the Leader of Opposition is expected to bring a dynamic shift in Delhi’s political discourse, as she takes on the BJP-led government in the assembly.
