June 26, 2021: Bhabesh Kalita, two-time Rangia MLA, has been appointed the Assam BJP President. Kalita was Minister of State for Irrigation and Education in the Sarbanada Sonowal –led BJP Government.

BJP National President J P Nadda made the announcement on Saturday.

Kalita thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President Nadda, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and others for choosing him as the state President of the unit party.

Kalita, an Advocate by profession will replace Ranjeet Kumar Dass who is the Minister for Panchayat & Rural Development, Public Health Engineering, Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister in the Himanta Biswa Sarma led-Cabinet.

Dass has been serving as the state BJP president since 2017. Dass had to step down as the as the state BJP President as the saffron party follows the policy of one man one post.

Kalita, 49, is a resident of Sutarkuchi in Kamrup district of Assam. He is the son of Late Hangsha Ram Deka. Kalita completed his B.Sc from Pragjyotish College, Guwahati in 1994 and LLB from University Law College in 2001.
