Betel Nut-Laden Truck Hijacked in Rangia, Driver and Handyman Assaulted

March 21, 2025: In a shocking incident, a gang of six hijacked a truck loaded with betel nuts in Rangia at midnight. The miscreants tied up the truck driver and handyman, brutally assaulted them, and later abandoned them in Mandakata after driving them around throughout the night.

According to reports, the truck, which was transporting betel nuts from Guwahati to Maharashtra, was intercepted in front of the Bangalikuchi petrol pump on the national highway. The hijackers arrived in a Swift Dzire car and forced the truck to stop before overpowering the driver and handyman.

After hijacking the vehicle, two of the gang members drove the truck towards Bongaigaon while the remaining members took the victims in the car. They tied up the driver and handyman, physically assaulted them, and eventually dumped them in Mandakata. The gang also looted cash and mobile phones from the truck driver.

The criminals later abandoned the truck near the Bijni toll gate but escaped with 1,200 kg of betel nuts packed in 173 sacks. Upon receiving the complaint, Bongaigaon police tracked the truck using GPS and successfully recovered it.

A case has been registered at Rangia police station, and investigations are underway. However, the police are yet to identify or apprehend the gang members involved in the crime. The incident has raised concerns over the security of transporters and truck drivers operating in the region.
