Guwahati: Tensions flared in Sivasagar, Assam on Friday as members of the Raijor Dal party staged protests, demanding that BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi be barred from entering the district.
The protests were sparked by Kurmi's alleged assault attempt on Akhil Gogoi as well as other senior MLAs including Sherman Ali.
The protesters, who burned effigies of Kurmi, claimed that he had "lost his mental stability" and demanded his immediate arrest. Raijor Dal leaders condemning Kurmi's behaviour, called for him to be banned from entering Sivasagar for any reason.
The demonstrations, marked by the burning of Kurmi’s effigy, stem from accusations that he assaulted Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi during a heated altercation in the Assam Assembly.
Some of the protesters also vowed to prevent Kurmi from "setting foot" in the district.
Earlier on Friday, several legislators at the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) were found to demand the expulsion of Mariani MLA, Rupjyoti Kurmi after he allegedly threatened several members.
As per reports, a heated exchange erupted on the ALA floor as Rupjymanoi Kurmi was accused of making several derogatory comments against opposition leaders, including Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Debabrata Saikia as well as MLAs, Akhil Gogoi and Sherman Ali.
Footage from the Assembly floor shows that Kurmi had even referred to the LoP and other MLAs as "monkeys" and nonsense.
The LoP, Debabrata Saikia following the incident stated that such derogatory and objectionable words as well as physical harm threats had no place on the assembly floor. Saikia urged the Deputy Speaker to take strick actions against Kurmi who had allegedly violated the decorum of the assembly.
There were further allegations that Kurmi had even approached forward to "assault" the opposition MLAs.
Saikia further asked if the members of the house now needed to come inside with security to be safe from such behaviour.
