Guwahati: A task force comprising scientists and environment engineers from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has begun a comprehensive audit and inspection of industrial units in Byrnihat, deemed the world's most polluted area.

Led by Member Secretary GH Chyrmang and senior scientist S Swer, the team visited eight factories on the first day, finding many operating with minimal regard for pollution control.

The MSPCB aims to evaluate air pollution levels and assess pollutants discharged into nearby rivers. The team discovered that many factories inconsistently use Pollution Control Devices (PCDs), only activating them during government inspections. Byrnihat, a regional industrial hub, has the highest annual average PM 2.5 concentration globally, posing severe health risks.

The pollution board has been tasked with submitting its report by March 26. This move follows a surprise inspection in February, which resulted in the closure of six industrial units and fines imposed on two for contributing to hazardous air pollution. The MSPCB's efforts aim to mitigate the environmental and health impacts of industrial activities in the region.
