October 26, 2024: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the hiring of a chartered flight to deport Indian nationals who have been residing in the country illegally. This action, taken in coordination with the Indian government, reflects the U.S. government's ongoing commitment to enforce immigration laws.
The charter flight departed for India on October 22, 2024. Kristie A. Canegallo, a senior official performing the duties of deputy secretary of homeland security, emphasized the administration's stance, stating, “Indian nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to swift removal. Intending migrants should not fall for the lies of smugglers who proclaim otherwise.”
This deportation initiative aligns with the recent Securing the Border Presidential Proclamation and Interim Final Rule enacted in June 2024, which has reportedly led to a 55 percent decrease in encounters along the U.S. southwest border. The DHS has actively worked to enforce immigration laws, resulting in the deportation or repatriation of over 160,000 individuals during fiscal year 2024. Additionally, more than 495 international flights have been organized to return individuals to over 145 countries, including India.
The DHS reiterated its commitment to collaborating with governments worldwide to ensure the effective repatriation of nationals lacking legal grounds to stay in the U.S. As the agency continues to prioritize legal immigration pathways, officials urge those seeking to migrate to refrain from engaging with human smugglers.
