Massive Rally in Chittagong Calls for Hindu Minority Rights in Bangladesh

October 26, 2024: In a significant show of solidarity, thousands of Hindus gathered at Laldighi Maidan in Chittagong on Friday, organized by the Sanatan Jagran Manch, to demand enhanced rights and security for minority communities in Bangladesh. The rally highlights ongoing concerns over minority treatment under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

Participants at the rally expressed their determination to continue protests until their eight key demands are met. These include the establishment of a tribunal to expedite trials for crimes against minorities, appropriate compensation and rehabilitation for victims, and the immediate enactment of a minority protection law. Additionally, they are calling for the formation of a dedicated ministry for minority affairs, the creation of prayer facilities in educational institutions, and the elevation of Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian welfare trusts to official foundations.

Among their other demands are the effective implementation of the Property Recovery and Preservation Act, modernization of the Sanskrit and Pali education board, and the declaration of a five-day holiday for Durga Puja.

In a statement released on Thursday, Bangladesh's environment minister, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, acknowledged the community's concerns and announced a historic two-day holiday for Durga Puja, marking a significant gesture towards inclusivity.

Notable author and activist Taslima Nasreen reacted to the rally, emphasizing the need for urgent governmental reforms to protect minority rights in Bangladesh. She expressed hope that the government would heed the voices of the minority communities and take meaningful action.
