Amit Shah to Inaugurate 'Maitri Dwar' Passenger Terminal at Petrapole Border Crossing

October 26, 2024: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to inaugurate a newly-constructed passenger terminal and cargo gate, dubbed 'Maitri Dwar,' at the India-Bangladesh land border crossing in Petrapole, West Bengal, this Sunday. This event marks a significant milestone for the region, enhancing its role as a vital gateway for trade and passenger movement between the two neighboring countries.

The Petrapole crossing, which connects India to Benapole in Bangladesh, is the largest land port in South Asia and a critical hub for commerce. Approximately 70 percent of land-based trade between India and Bangladesh transits through this port, which is managed by the Land Ports Authority of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The new passenger terminal is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for the over 23.5 lakh passengers who pass through this border annually, making it the eighth largest international immigration port in India. Officials highlighted that the upgraded facilities will streamline the flow of travelers and cargo, bolstering economic ties between India and Bangladesh.
