Hezbollah walkie-talkie explosions kill 20, Heighten Fear of Broader Conflict with Israel

September 19, 2024: A series of explosions involving walkie-talkies and other electronic devices used by Hezbollah has left at least 20 people dead and more than 450 injured across southern Lebanon. This incident follows a devastating event the previous day, where thousands of pagers detonated simultaneously in Lebanon and parts of Syria, killing 12 and injuring around 3,000.

The explosions were concentrated in Hezbollah strongholds, including the southern suburbs of Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. Reports from Lebanon's official news agency indicated that solar energy systems at homes in the capital also exploded, resulting in injuries, including that of a young girl.

The Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed that many victims of Wednesday's blasts were attending funerals for those killed in the earlier pager explosions, highlighting the community’s grief.

Hezbollah has blamed Israel for the explosions, pledging to retaliate. On Wednesday, the militant group launched three strikes against northern Israel, one occurring shortly after the walkie-talkie blasts.

As tensions rise, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is expected to address the situation in a significant speech on Thursday, raising fears of a potential escalation in hostilities between the two sides.
