March 11, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday for a two-day visit, receiving a grand welcome at the airport in Port Louis. Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam personally greeted him with a warm embrace, signifying the deep ties between the two nations.
PM Modi’s visit coincides with Mauritius’ 57th National Day celebrations, where he has been invited as the Chief Guest. A contingent of Indian Defence Forces, along with an Indian Navy ship, will also participate in the celebrations, highlighting India’s strong maritime and strategic partnership with the island nation.
Before his departure, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm about the visit on social media. "I look forward to meeting my friend and Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam. I am also eager to be interacting with the Indian community there," he tweeted. He also emphasized the historical and cultural ties between the two countries, calling Mauritius a "close maritime neighbor and a key Indian Ocean partner."
Upon landing, PM Modi reiterated his commitment to strengthening India-Mauritius relations. "Landed in Mauritius. I am grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration in various sectors," he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
During his stay, PM Modi is set to meet Mauritian President Dharam Gokhool and PM Ramgoolam. In the evening, he will address a special community program, engaging with the Indian diaspora in Mauritius.
The visit is also expected to see the inauguration of over 20 India-funded projects, underscoring India’s continued commitment to development partnerships with Mauritius. The discussions between the two leaders are likely to focus on trade, investment, and cooperation in areas such as maritime security, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges.
