Bangladesh's Muhammad Yunus will have a meeting with Hindu leaders today in light of recent attacks on temples and houses

August 13, 2024: The interim government in Bangladesh has promised to take action against those who damaged temples and committed robbery and arson against minority groups. Muhammad Yunus, the leader of the interim government in Bangladesh, plans to meet with Hindu Bengali leaders on Tuesday. Days after multiple Hindu temples, homes, and establishments were damaged in the country during the political turmoil, the temporary government has promised to penalize those responsible for desecrating minority temples and committing theft and arson.

Since the government led by Sheikh Hasina lost power, two Hindu groups report 205 attacks on minorities across 52 districts. Besides vandalism, at least two Hindu leaders linked to the Awami League party led by Hasina were murdered in the unrest in Bangladesh following her departure from the country.

The public letter recognized Yunus as a "symbol of a new era", characterized by major student and public movements working towards creating a fair society. However, the newspaper also conveyed deep sadness and worry about the violence against minorities that have tarnished these accomplishments.

Since August 9, minority communities in Dhaka and Chattagram have been organizing large protest demonstrations. On August 10, protesters obstructed traffic for more than three hours at Shahbagh in the central area of the capital city. Thousands of Muslim demonstrators, including students, also participated showing support for the plight of minorities.
