September 14, 2024: In an unanticipated move, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the protest site outside Swasthya Bhawan on Saturday, where junior doctors have been demonstrating in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College.
Banerjee, visibly concerned, addressed the protesting doctors, stating, “I have spent sleepless nights seeing you protest in the rain. I assure you that I will thoroughly review your demands and take appropriate action if anyone is found guilty.” She underscored that her visit was made not as the Chief Minister but as their 'Didi,' reflecting a personal connection to their plight.
Despite Banerjee's assurances, the doctors have maintained their stance, insisting they will not resume work or make concessions until their demands are formally discussed. The protest has drawn significant attention and highlighted ongoing issues within the medical community regarding safety and justice.
