Violence Erupts at Sonapur Eviction Site: Two Dead, Dozens Injured

September 12, 2024: A violent clash erupted today at the Sonapur eviction site, resulting in the deaths of two alleged encroachers and injuring at least 30 police officers and soldiers. The confrontation unfolded when squatters, who had been occupying the Kachutali area, violently resisted the eviction efforts.

The situation began as authorities attempted to remove the encroachers after three days of relatively peaceful eviction activities. According to reports, the squatters aggressively attacked the police and administrative staff, including Sonapur Circle Officer and Magistrate Nitul Khatniar. The altercation quickly escalated as the squatters, armed with sticks and stones, confronted law enforcement.

During the chaos, the encroachers reportedly detained two police officers, prompting the police to open fire in self-defense. The violence resulted in numerous injuries and damage to police and administrative vehicles, which were vandalized by the protesters.

Injured officers were promptly transported to Sonapur Civil Hospital and GMCH for treatment. The clash has raised concerns and highlighted the difficulties faced by authorities in managing such high-tension situations.
