Trump orders airstrike on Houthi rebels

March 16, 2025: The US has launched a wave of air strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen, with President Donald Trump stating that the attacks were a response to the group’s aggression against shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthis, backed by Iran, have been targeting merchant vessels with missiles, drones, and small boat attacks, resulting in the sinking of two vessels, the seizure of a third, and the deaths of 4 crew members.

The US strikes, which Trump described as “decisive and powerful”, aimed to degrade the Houthi’s capabilities to attack Red Sea targets. The group hasn’t been deterred by previous US and British air strikes or the deployment of Western warships to protect merchant vessels.

The Houthis began targeting shipping in response to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, claiming to support Palestinians. However, they have also attacked ships with no apparent links to Israel, the US, or the UK. Major shipping companies have been forced to reroute around south Africa, avoiding the Red Sea, which accounts for nearly 15% of global seaborne trade.

The conflict has escalated, with Israel conducting air strikes against the Houthis since July.

The situation remains tense, with the Houthis vowing to respond to US strikes. The group’s health ministry reported at least 15 deaths and nine injuries in the latest US strikes.
