March 23, 2025: A controversy has erupted surrounding Justice Yashwant Verma, a Delhi High Court Judge, after the Supreme Court released videos released videos and photos allegedly showing burnt cash recovered from his residence. However, Justice Verma has vehemently denied these allegations, stating that no currency notes were removed or seized from his building following a fire incident in his storeroom last week.
In a detailed response to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Verma claimed that the video and the photos released by the Supreme Court were misleading. He stated that even if the video was taken at the time of the incident, none of the allegedly burnt cash appeared to have been recovered or seized.
Justice Verma, who wasn’t present in his residence during the incident on March 14, said that his daughter and staff informed him that the authorities didn’t show any sacks of charred notes or currency being taken away after the fire was extinguished.
The Delhi Police Commissioner had shared a video with the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, allegedly showing a bagful of charred notes being recovered from Justice Verma’s residence.
The Supreme Court has constituted a three-member committee to conduct an in-house inquiry into the matter. Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court has been asked to not assign any judicial matter to Justice Verma.
