March 26, 2025: China and India are taking steps to improve their relationship, with plans to resume direct flights between the two countries. This move comes five years after flights were halted due to the COVID 19 pandemic and border clashes.
Before the pandemic, there were 50 direct flights per week from Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Chinese Consul General in Kolkata, Xu Wei, stated that both countries are working to resume these flights as soon as possible.
This development follows a visit by India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Mistri, to China in January. During this visit, both countries agreed in principle to resume direct air services.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China, several events will be held. Wei expressed confidence in the ties between the two nations, saying that, “Spring of India and China relations is arriving.”
Additionally, Chinese authorities hope that India will relax its visa policy for Chinese citizens and increase trade between the two countries.
