March 25, 2025: A military coup may be imminent in Bangladesh, with sources suggesting that the army, led by General Waker-Uz-Zaman, is considering removing interim govt Chief Muhammad Yunus and taking control. This development comes after a high level emergency meeting was held on Monday, attended by top army officers, including five Lieutenant Generals and eight Major Generals.
The meeting’s focus was on the potential role of the military in restoring stability in the country which has been plagued by growing mistrust towards the govt since Yunus took charge in August last year. The army may pressure the President to declare a state of emergency or stage a coup against Yunus , and is also exploring the option of forming a national unity govt under its oversight.
The military’s move is reportedly in response to various political parties and student leaders speaking out against the army in recent months. This has upset many sections within the military, prompting them to devise a plan to control the protesters.
Meanwhile, Yunus is scheduled to visit China soon, a move that could alter China-Bangladesh relations and will be closely watched by Dhaka’s neighbours. The development coincides with the Bangladesh Army intensifying operations across Dhaka, following a series of protest marches.
A widespread social media campaign against the Army has also been underway, sparked by France based Bangladeshi social media influencer Pinaki Bhattacharya, who has accused the Army Chief of being influenced by India.
Amid the tensions, a student-led party has alleged that the military is planning to rehabilitate Hasina’s Awami League, a charge denied by the Army.
