Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the government has formed a dedicated committee to evaluate the long-standing demand for making Tura the winter capital of Meghalaya.
The decision follows extensive discussions in the Assembly, where a member proposed the idea and sought clarity on its implications.
Addressing the media after the session, the Chief Minister explained that the proposal involves temporarily shifting the executive branch of the government—including ministers and the chief secretary—to Tura for a specific period.
This would also include holding Assembly sessions in the town.
Sangma stated that the upcoming Rs 170-crore integrated administrative complex in Tura would play a key role in facilitating government operations and improving accessibility for the people of the region.
The newly formed committee will include leaders from all political parties along with various stakeholders.
Additionally, consultations will be held with community representatives, NGOs, and other organizations to ensure a well-informed decision on the matter.
During the Assembly session, opposition leader Mukul Sangma tabled a resolution in favor of designating Tura as the winter capital.
He stated that since the government already conducts cabinet meetings in different parts of the state, it should not be difficult to implement this proposal.
He also pointed out that previous governments had taken initiatives to bring governance closer to the people, which had contributed to Meghalaya’s development.
