Tura: The proposed expansion of the railway network in Garo Hills, Meghalaya, initially praised by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, is now facing stiff opposition from local organizations.

As per reports, the A'chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) (Southern Zone) has expressed concerns over the potential risks of illegal immigration and influx associated with the railway extension to Baghmara.

AHAM has written to the Chief Minister citing lack of regulatory mechanisms to monitor and prevent large-scale migration.

The organisation stated that introducing a railway line without adequate safeguards might exacerbate the existing issues of unchecked influx, illegal land encroachments and marginalization of indigenous communities.

Instead of the railway project, AHAM has urged the government to prioritize the development of NH-217, which has been "neglected" for over 53 years, and focus on all-around development of the district

The organization stated that need for infrastructure development, better road networks, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and socio-economic initiatives to uplift the indigenous communities was more important.

AHAM requested the Chief Minister to reconsider the railway project and establish a proper framework to regulate migration and protect the land, culture, and rights of the Scheduled Tribes in Meghalaya before discussing rail connectivity.
