Guwahati: Representatives of the Meitei Alliance and Thadou Inpi Manipur have jointly called for the implementation of a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.
This demand was made during a meeting on community understanding for peaceful co-existence.
The groups also pressed for the removal of "Any Kuki Tribe" from Manipur's Scheduled Tribes (ST) list, citing it as an inaccurate classification.
The Meitei Alliance and Thadou Inpi raised concerns over identity misclassification in the state, emphasizing the need to recognize the original inhabitants of Manipur and update citizenship records.
They also stressed the importance of preserving Manipur's multi-ethnic fabric by fostering unity, integrity, and mutual respect among all communities.
The meeting was led by M James Thadou, President of Thadou Inpi Manipur, and Sagolsem Biramani, representing the Meitei Alliance.
While the Thadou Inpi expressed concerns over being caught in the crossfire between the Kukis and Meiteis, the Meitei Alliance maintained a non-negotiable stance against demands for a separate Union Territory administration by certain Kuki groups.
