March 19, 2025: A day after unleashing its most intense airstrikes in months, Israel has launched targeted ground operations in Gaza, escalating tensions in the region.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), troops have begun operations in central and southern Gaza to expand a security buffer zone and strengthen control over the Netzarim Corridor. The military further announced the deployment of the elite Golani Brigade to the Southern Command, keeping them ready for further action.
"The IDF will continue to operate against terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip in order to protect the citizens of the State of Israel," the military stated.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a stern warning to Gazans, urging them to heed US President Donald Trump's call to return Israeli hostages and oust Hamas. "This is the last warning," Katz stated in a video message, suggesting that compliance could lead to alternative solutions, including migration options for those who wish to leave Gaza.
The recent hostilities erupted after Israel launched an intense wave of airstrikes early Tuesday, marking the end of a ceasefire with Hamas that had been in place since January. Palestinian authorities report that at least 436 people, including 183 children and 94 women, have been killed since the strikes began. Another 678 people have been wounded.
The IDF claims its operations specifically target Hamas militants, while Palestinian sources say the airstrikes have devastated civilian areas. Israel maintains that Hamas’ presence in densely populated regions results in civilian casualties.
The conflict in Gaza, previously paused by an internationally-brokered ceasefire, has already been one of the deadliest for humanitarian workers, according to the United Nations. With the resumption of hostilities, the situation remains dire for civilians trapped in the ongoing violence.
