Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Director of Health Services, Assam, to submit a factual report on the actions taken against unlicensed medical practitioners, commonly known as quacks, in the state. The report should include details of the actions taken by the Anti-Quackery Units in each district.
The court's directive comes after the Director of Health Services filed an affidavit on March 7, highlighting the efforts made to identify and take action against quacks in each district. According to the affidavit, Anti-Quackery Units have been formed in almost every district, and they regularly inspect clinical establishments.
However, the petitioner's counsel, I. Chowdhury, expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of inspections conducted by the Anti-Quackery Units. The court has also allowed the petitioner, who has been appointed as the Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Officer by the Assam Council of Medical Registration, to submit a report on the actions taken against quacks.
The development is part of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Gauhati High Court, seeking action against quacks operating in Assam. The court's directive is aimed at ensuring that the state takes concrete steps to prevent unauthorized medical practice and protect public health.
