Guwahati: Two children who had been missing since Thursday were found dead in a pond in Jonai of Dhemaji, Assam on Friday.
The deceased were residents of Milanpur village in Jonai.
The victims, Hiramani Pegu and Jiri Kuli were daughters of Bhavjit Pegu and Debananda Kuli, respectively.
According to reports, the children went missing on Thursday, prompting their families and villagers to launch a frantic search. However, despite their efforts, no trace of the missing children was found until their bodies were discovered on Friday.
While the exact cause of death is still unknown, locals suspect that the erosion of a nearby pond may have contributed to the tragedy.
They, however, have not ruled out the possibility of a murder. One of the residents said that the bodies were found buried in the pond and they are waiting for the police investifation.
The police have begun an investigation after recovering the bodies and sending them for postmortem examination.
Police said that all angles into the incident are being looked out for.
