2 Indian origin women in Canada’s new cabinet

March 16, 2025: Indo-Canadian Anita Anand, and Delhi born Kamal Khera, have been appointed to key positions in Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new cabinet. Anand, 58, will serve as Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, while Khera, 36, will take on the role of Minister of Health.

Both Anand and Khera, are retaining their ministerial posts from former PM Trudeau’s cabinet, albeit with different portfolios. This move is a testament to their expertise and dedication to public work.

Anand, born and raised in rural Nova Scotia, moved to Ontario in 1985. On the other hand, Khera’s family immigrated to Canada when she was still in school.

Prime Minister Carney’s cabinet consists of 13 men and 11 women, making it smaller than Trudeau’s 37 member team.

“Canada, meet your new cabinet. We have built a smaller, focused, and experienced team that is made to meet this moment.” PM Carney said.
