Guwahati: The office bearers of Naga Hoho (NH) in Nagaland have disowned a press statement issued by the NH president, titled "It's time to wrap up Naga Peace Talk".
As per reports, the statement, published on February 26, 2025, was deemed to contain opinions and assertions on contentious Naga political issues that were "tantamount to imposition upon the negotiating parties".
According to a press release issued by NH Vice President David Boyes, General Secretary Atoho K Kiho, and other executives, the NH president's statement was issued without prior consultation or notice to the core members of the executives.
This, they termed, was "unfortunate" and not the first instance of "such unilateral public statements".
The NH executives emphasized that their organization had agreed on the need for a unified approach to the Naga political issue, paving the way for a common draft that incorporated both the signed agreements for a final settlement.
However, they clarified that there was no discussion on competencies or the need to issue a public statement on them at this juncture.
The NH president was informally and formally advised to retract the press statement, but failed to do so. Consequently, the NH executives have disowned the statement, categorizing it as a personal opinion of the president rather than the collective position of the Naga Hoho.
Moving forward, the NH executives have stated that they will abide by the decision of the NH Federal Assembly, which is scheduled to convene shortly. They have also opted not to engage in any public debate on the matter through the press or social media.
