Itanagar: A critically injured bar-headed goose was reportedly rescued in Dirang, West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh, on Saturday after being shot by unknown miscreants.
The rare bird was found by local youths and underwent a successful one-hour surgery to remove a bullet pellet.
The rescue effort was a collaborative response by the administration, WWF India, and local communities. The incident has prompted the Bomdila Forest Division to take decisive action to protect migratory birds in the region.
Forest officials have been instructed to be vigilant and ensure the safe stay of these birds. An order has been issued under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, banning hunting, trapping, and poaching in the Chug Valley habitat.
The arrival of a significant number of bar-headed geese in the region has been reported, with sightings in new locations. Local organisations have been urged to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these migratory birds. Strict legal action will be taken against violators.
