Guwahati: In a bid to enhance road safety and prevent accidents on the National Highway, the state transport department has planned to install radar speed detection devices on major streets in Guwahati, Assam.
The initiative aims to monitor and control speeding vehicles, promoting a safer driving environment.
On an experimental basis, two devices have been set up on both sides of the national highway at Betkuchi in the city.
These machines display the real-time speed of vehicles, serving as a deterrent to drivers exceeding the speed limit.
According to sources, over 20 such devices will be installed at key locations across the city. While the primary objective is to monitor and control speed, it is unclear whether the devices will automatically penalize vehicles based on the displayed speed.
To ensure effective enforcement, interceptors will continue to patrol the areas, monitoring vehicles and taking necessary action against traffic violators. The state transport and police departments will oversee the operation of these devices, utilizing them to promote road safety and discipline among drivers.
