March 6, 2025: Residents of Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh have reported aggressive stray dogs on a rampage as one child was killed recently.
The dogs are frequently reported to have been attacking humans and livestock alike.
The situation has turned grave, with one child killed and 14 people injured in dog attacks over the past 10 days.
The attacks have been reported from several areas of the district, including Shivpur and Mahsi blocks.
The administration has been making public announcements through loudspeakers in affected villages, advising residents to carry sticks when stepping out in the evening.
District Magistrate has also issued an advisory, instructing parents not to let children venture out alone.
She has also warned officials of strict action if such attacks recur in their areas.
A massive awareness campaign has been launched across 192 villages to educate residents about the threat.
Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Rajesh Upadhyay said that over 6,000 pets and stray animals have been vaccinated against rabies as a precautionary measure.
Teams from various departments are conducting awareness drives, and authorities are using e-rickshaws equipped with loudspeakers to spread awareness in severely affected areas.
A sterilization drive is also underway, with 92 stray dogs sterilized so far.
The administration has identified high-risk areas through a survey of community health centre data and is conducting targeted awareness campaigns. The situation is being closely monitored, and officials have been warned of punitive action if the situation spirals out of control.
