March 8, 2025: In a groundbreaking move to celebrate International Women’s Day, Central Railways has made history by operating the Vande Bharat Express with an all-women crew for the first time. Train No. 22223, running from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai to Sainagar Shirdi, was entirely managed by women, including the loco pilot, assistant loco pilot, train manager, ticket examiners, and onboard hostesses.
The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ efforts to promote gender inclusivity and recognize the contribution of women in the sector. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railways, highlighted the importance of this step, stating, “Indian Railways has always aimed at empowering women. As part of this initiative, on International Women’s Day, the CSMT-Shirdi Vande Bharat Express is being operated by an all-women crew. We also plan to extend this initiative to other Vande Bharat trains. Additionally, a goods train under Central Railways is also being operated entirely by women today.”
The Central Railways took to social media to mark this historic moment, calling it a proud celebration of women's strength, leadership, and dedication. A post on X read:
"HISTORIC MOMENT! For the first time ever, a Vande Bharat Express is being fully operated by an all-women crew, departing from CSMT on this #InternationalWomensDay! A proud moment for Indian Railways as we celebrate the strength, dedication, and leadership of women!"
Adding to the celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to ‘Nari Shakti’ on the occasion, acknowledging the achievements of women across various fields. In a special gesture, he handed over his social media platforms to women achievers for the day, allowing them to share their inspiring journeys.
"We bow to our Nari Shakti on #WomensDay! Our Government has always worked towards empowering women, as reflected in our policies and programs. Today, as promised, my social media accounts will be taken over by women making remarkable contributions in diverse fields!" PM Modi posted on X.
This milestone by Indian Railways is not just a symbolic gesture but a step toward greater gender inclusivity in the transport sector, paving the way for more opportunities for women in critical roles.
