“Shocking Lapse”: High Court Grills Dispur Police Over Case Negligence

March 19, 2025: The Gauhati High Court has strongly reprimanded the Dispur police for their failure to submit an affidavit despite multiple directives. The court, expressing its frustration, questioned the prolonged delay in obtaining information, stating, “Humans have reached Earth from space in a day, so why does it take so long for information to arrive from Dispur?”

The case dates back to a month ago when a driver and a vehicle went missing. While the driver’s dead body was eventually recovered, the vehicle remains untraced. The car owner recently filed a complaint, but the Dispur police did not register a case, forcing the petitioner to seek legal intervention.

Taking note of the police inaction, the High Court issued a notice on March 7 directing the submission of an explanation for the failure to register a case. The matter was brought up for hearing again on Wednesday, where the government’s legal representatives failed to provide any information and instead sought more time.

Visibly displeased, the High Court denied unnecessary delays, ordering the required details to be submitted by 2 PM the same day. However, when the deadline passed, the petitioner’s lawyer informed the court that the police had not even responded to phone calls.

This blatant negligence has raised serious concerns over the efficiency of the law enforcement agency. The court is now expected to take stringent action against the responsible officials in the upcoming hearings.
