Uproar in Assam Legislative Assembly after MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi threatens to break LoP's mic

Guwahati: Several legislators at the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) were found to demand the expulsion of Mariani MLA, Rupjyoti Kurmi after he allegedly threatened several members on Friday.



As per reports, a heated exchange erupted on the ALA floor as Rupjymanoi Kurmi was accused of making several derogatory comments against opposition leaders, including Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Debabrata Saikia as well as MLAs, Akhil Gogoi and Sherman Ali.



Footage from the Assembly floor shows that Kurmi had even referred to the LoP and other MLAs as "monkeys" and nonsense.



The LoP, Debabrata Saikia following the incident stated that such derogatory and objectionable words as well as physical harm threats had no place on the assembly floor. Saikia urged the Deputy Speaker to take strick actions against Kurmi who had allegedly violated the decorum of the assembly.



There were further allegations that Kurmi had even approached forward to "assault" the opposition MLAs.



Saikia further asked if the members of the house now needed to come inside with security to be safe from such behaviour.

Kurmi was heard saying, "I will break your mic! Let me finish speaking." His comments sparked outrage among opposition members, who demanded that the Speaker suspend Kurmifor using unparliamentary language.



The incident was intervened Numal Momin who urged members to maintain decorum and respect during discussions. Despite his efforts, the commotion continued and he issued a warning to Kurmi.



Sherman Ali and Akhil Gogoi following the incident said that Kurmi acting in such a way calls for his suspension if not expulsion from the house. However, he was only let go with a warning.



They said that no one had ever witnessed such behaviour in the Assam Assembly and it was highly condemnable.
