Imphal: A five-member Supreme Court delegation, led by Justice BR Gavai, visited Manipur on Saturday to meet with people displaced by the ongoing ethnic violence. The delegation included Justices Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, KV Viswanathan, and N Kotiswar Singh, who described the visit as a "remarkable" event.

Justice Kotiswar Singh, the only Supreme Court judge from Manipur and a member of the Meitei community, stressed the importance of maintaining peace and focusing on the future. "We must look forwards and think of the future. We should not live in the past, pain or tragedy that has taken place," he said.

Although Justice Singh was unable to visit the Kuki-Zo-dominated Churachandpur due to objections from a local lawyers' body, he expressed no regrets and hoped to visit soon. The delegation's visit was appreciated by the judges, who praised the climate, food, and people of Manipur.

Justice Sundresh expressed optimism that more people would visit the state soon, saying, "Manipur is a great place and will make India proud." Justice KV Viswanathan assured that peace was on its way to Manipur and wished for a bright and harmonious future for the state.

The visit comes amid ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which has resulted in over 250 deaths and the displacement of thousands since May 3, 2023.
