Guwahati: An individual has been arrested in Juria of Nagaon, Assam on Monday night over his alleged involvement in forging Aadhaar, PAN and voter documents.
The accused identified as Asadul Islam is accused of being the alleged mastermind behind the large-scale fraud.
His arrest follows an FIR lodged by Gulzar Hussain at Dagaon police station, accusing Islam of swindling crores of rupees by exploiting unsuspecting individuals under the guise of providing loans.
According to reports, Asadul Islam’s fraudulent activities came to light after Hussain, a resident of Juria, reported that Islam had deceitfully taken a loan of Rs 3,75,000 in the name of Hussain’s son, Ghulam Usmani. The complaint alleged that Islam used forged documents to secure the loan and later faked a "suicide" to evade accountability. Based on this FIR, police launched an investigation, culminating in Islam’s arrest.
Investigations have revealed that Islam’s scam extended far beyond this single incident. He is accused of defrauding numerous people by producing counterfeit identity documents, including Aadhaar cards, PAN cards and voter IDs, which he used to secure loans and siphon off massive sums of money. Victims estimate that the total amount looted could run into crores of rupees, with many victims being ordinary citizens misled by promises of easy financial assistance.
The police have begun further investigation in connection with the incident.
