Shillong: The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) staged a protest march towards the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, opposing the Meghalaya State Investment Promotion Facilitation (MSIPF) Act 2024 and other pressing issues.

The union claimed that the MSIPF Act is detrimental to the tribal community and contradicts the Meghalaya Land Transfer Regulation Act, 1971.

KSU General Secretary Donald Thabah stated that the Act would lead to tribals losing their land, which is essential to their identity.

The protestors also conveyed their opposition to the introduction of railways in the state, arguing that it would not necessarily lead to cheaper essential commodities.

Additionally, the KSU leaders highlighted the delay in addressing their demand for an Inner Line Permit (ILP) from the centre and the lack of a mechanism to check influx into the state.

The Meghalaya government has removed paragraph 34 of the MSIPF Act and added a clause stating that the Act shall not override the Meghalaya Land Transfer Regulation Act, 1971.

However, the KSU showed dissatisfaction and demanded the repeal of the Act.
