Moon to turn red on Holi this year

March 10, 2025: A magnificent celestial event is about to coincide with the Holi festival in India.

The event, where the sun, the moon and the earth align to form a total lunar eclipse, also known as blood moon will take place on March 14, on the day of holi.

However, it won’t be visible in India, as it will take place during daytime according to IST.

This year, blood moon will be visible in North and South America. Europe, Africa and Asia will be deprived of the opportunity to view this majestic event.

This reddish hue is caused by a phenomenon called as Rayleigh scattering, the same cause behind red sunsets.

Unlike a solar eclipse, lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with the naked eye, telescopes etc without having the need of special protection.

The last blood moon occurred in November of 2022, which was also not visible in India.

The last Blood Moon visible from India occurred on May 26, 2021, and it was a total lunar eclipse. The next Blood moon visible from India will be in September this year.
