March 10, 2025: Nepal was the last Hindu kingdom until 2008, when a movement put an end to its monarchy. Nepal became a republic country thereafter.
Till 2025, there have been 13 governments in 17 years.
As of now, people are getting frustrated with the government, owing to growing corruption and decreasing economic growth. People want monarchy to return.
Recently, there have been protests demanding the restoration of the monarchy, which was abolished in 2008. Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Kathmandu, calling for the reinstatement of the monarchy and Nepal’s status as a Hindu state.
Those in favour of the monarchy’s return argue that it could serve as a unifying force in a politically fragmented nation, providing stability and continuity.
They also believe that the monarchy could reinforce Nepal’s cultural and spiritual heritage, offering a sense of continuity and pride for many Nepalese who feel alienated from the current political system.
However, KP Sharma Oli, the Prime Minister of Nepal refuses the possibility of return of monarchy.
“Some people are shouting slogan these days to reinstate monarchy, which is simple not possible.” Said Oli.
