March 11, 2025: The heated argument between centre and Tamil Nadu is still going on, regarding the three- language formula. The problem began when the centre decided to implement the three language formula of NEP (National Education Policy) 2020.
MK Stalin, chief minister of Tamil Nadu has accused the centre of trying to impose Hindi in the non hindi speaking state. Recently the central government withheld funds to Tamil Nadu under the Samagra Shikhsha scheme due to state’s refusal to implement the three language formula.
This move has sparked debate, with the DMK chief saying the centre is trying to impose Hindi. He also said, the union education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan thinks of himself as King and speaks arrogantly.
Mr Pradhan on the other hand, said the DMK agreed to the three language formula initially, but pulled back later to use this as an emotional issue in the upcoming Assembly election.
This comment sparked outrage in the Lok Sabha which was then adjourned for half an hour.
The controversy has its root in the 1960s, when the Parliament mandated Hindi teaching under the three-language formula. The DMK government in Tamil Nadu, led by C.N. Annadurai, rejected this formula and passed a resolution in 1968 reinforcing the state’s two language policy.
One thing that needs to be mentioned here is that, centre decided to conduct CAPF exams in 13 regional languages in 2023, following the protest of MK Stalin.
