Guwahati: At least seven suspects were arrested for the alleged assault of a 62-year-old woman in Dibrugarh, Assam while accusing her of witchcraft.



The Sanga surnamed woman belongs to the Adivasi community and was assaulted by a group of several individuals on Monday.



The accused, who have been identified as Suraj Sanga, Binod Sanga, Jumuna Sanga, Surajmoni Sanga, Sangita Sanga, Alisha Sanga, and Fulmoni Sanga attacked the elderly woman on suspicion of practicing witchcraft.



According to reports, the victim was forcibly dragged out of her home, subjected to severe physical abuse and thrown into a river in a critical condition.



Her husband was also assaulted during the attack.



The Lahowal police shortly after the incident intervened and rescued the victim. She has been admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for treatment. Her condition remains critical, reports stated.



A case has been registered at Lahowal Police Station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.
