Guwahati: In a significant boost to the Indian Army's combat capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth USD 248 million with Rosoboronexport (RoE), Russian Federation, to procure 1000 HP engines for T-72 tanks.

The deal includes the transfer of technology (ToT) to enable licensed production of the engines in India, aligning with the "Make in India" initiative in the defense sector.

The T-72 tank, with over 2,400 units in service, is the mainstay of the Indian Army's tank fleet.

Currently fitted with 780 HP engines, the upgrade to 1000 HP engines will significantly enhance the tanks' battlefield mobility and offensive capabilities.

The contract includes the supply of engines in fully formed, completely knocked down, and semi-knocked down conditions. The ToT agreement will enable Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) at the Heavy Vehicle Factory in Avadi, Chennai, to integrate and produce the engines locally.

This deal strengthens India's defence ties with Russia, with Russia being India's top defence supplier for decades.

The upgrade is expected to enhance the Indian Army's combat effectiveness and provide a significant boost to its military capabilities.
