Guwahati: The Indian government has informed the Supreme Court that 13 out of 63 Bangladeshi nationals detained in Assam's Matia transit camp have been deported to Bangladesh.
The verification process for the remaining detainees is ongoing with the Bangladeshi High Commission.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that the Bangladesh High Commission is involved in the deportation process to ascertain the nationality of the detainees. The government is making diplomatic efforts to repatriate the remaining illegal immigrants living in Assam's detention centers.
The Supreme Court had questioned the lack of action regarding the 63 individuals in the transit camps whose nationality was confirmed on February 4, 2025. Mehta explained that there are two classes of illegal foreigners: those whose nationality is known and those whose nationality is unknown.
The government has sent the Nationality Status Verification Format of the detained foreigners to the Ministry of External Affairs, with reminders issued on the same day. The Court has directed the Assam government to file another affidavit by April 30, 2025, detailing the status of the NSVs and any further deportations.
